Note to Debbie Anderson about Pop's Air Rescue Service:

I visited with Pop today (7-28-2009), and these are some of his memories.
First lieutenant, Willis S. Dunks, was assigned to the 71st Air Rescue Squadron, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage Alaska in March, 1955. He first travelled to Florida for 3 months training in flying the Grumman Albatros SA16. The SA16 was a complex airplane that could land on land, sea, ice or snow. It was also called the “flying boat” or “slobbering albert (albatross)” because of the boat hull spray as it landed or took off. He spent many hours taking off and landing on Lake Okachobee, Florida. He arrived in Alaska in August 1955.
His assignment as pilot of the SA16 was air and sea rescue anywhere, and to anyone, where they were needed in the State of Alaska. His commanding officer was Col. Maurice E. Speer. He was promoted to Captain while in Alaska, and he completed Artic Survival Training School in March, 1956. He often described flying as “hours and hours of boredom, punctuated by moments of stark terror.”
He has hundreds of stories of rescuing downed pilots, evacuating Alaskan natives from villages, both regular and emergency situations, such as evacuating women having babies, and other medical needs. Once he carried a 90 pound Eskimo woman suffering from Tuberculosis to his airplane, and remembers her big smile with no teeth. He also searched for lost and injured hunters.
He carried medical personnel who parachuted out of the plane when necessary, and those paramedics had a dog named Sam. Sam was trained for rescue operations, and once they tossed Sam out of the SA16 with a parachute to let him experience the effects. They never got Sam back in that airplane.
They also flew reconnaissance missions of Russian Movements at low level just a few feet above the Bering Sea off the coast of Russia.
When the Yukon River flooded during the “thaw” near Bethel, Alaska, they dropped blankets and needed supplies to the Eskimos.
He once set the Tundra on fire by tossing out an emergency flare and when it touched the dry tundra, it burst into flames. He was not sure how they were going to get it out, but used a bull dozer to put it out.
He often landed in remote villages and landing fields were very precarious – very short and often running up to a mountain face. They used Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO) bottles when needed to take off. They were 4 JATO bottles (2 on each side) which provided 1000 pounds of thrust each for 14 seconds. It was quite a site and quite a ride. He often dropped (jettisoned) the JATO bottles after use and always aimed for a moose to scare.
He also recalls being the first to land on one of these air strips and radioing back to the next plane to land, to be very careful of the softspots in the runway which might cause an airplane to tip over. He was surprised to hear the pilot of the plane behind him was his commanding officer Col. Speer saying, “Roger, Roger.”
