  • Notes
    • December 18, 1935, Ella Florence Dunks Scott recalled that Henry Levi Dunks and Julia Corene Gill lived with the Emanuel Dunks' family their first year of marriage. Henry Levi Dunks and Ella's brother inherited a tract of land out of Lot 2 of the John Merry League in Harris County, Texas.

They built a home presumably on the land they inherited but upon completion found that they had built their home on tract 3 of the John Merry League, Harris county, Texas, which said lot 3 was owned by W. R. Baker. This necessitated that Henry Levi Dunks purchase lot 3 from W. R. Baker, which he did. This gave him a total acreage of 678 acres of land in lots 2 & 3 of the John Merry League, Harris County, Texas. After their purchase and inheritance of these lands, they lived there peacefully, without molestation, and used and enjoyed said property as a home, for cultivation, grazing and pasture land, and used the wooded portion for the purpose of running cattle, firewood, fence posts and sold the timber off the same several times to saw mill companies.

The land has been used, enjoyed, cultivated, by them for more than fifty years prior to their death, without adverse claim from any person or persons as to any part or portion or all of said land.

This land has been fenced on three sides for more than fifty years. A fence ran the length of the east line of the 678 acre tract; and that it ran along the north and south lines of said 678 acre tract all the way from the east line in a westwardly direction to the woods, or timbered land, which was used as stated as run for cattle, firewood, fence posts and for selling timber off the same with a cross fence at the edge of the timber or woods.

In 1895 Henry Levi Dunks built a new house on 160 acres out of lot 3 of the John Merry League, Harris County, Texas, such new house being built is the one that is now occupied by E. M. & Lyda Dunks. They lived with Granny Dunks (Julia Corene) until she died. The house is known as the Henry Levi Dunks old home place and is the place that was bequeathed to E. M. Dunks under the wills of his father Henry Levi and his mother Julia C. Dunks.

The fences surrounding this land as stated above are good and substantial fences; that they wer built as such and have been kept and maintained as such.

The 678 acres above named are generally considered by all who know the land to be the property of and known as "Dunks Estate".

Sworn and subscribed to before a Notary Public on the 18th day of December, A.D., 1935

Henry Levi and Julia Corinne Gill met in Louisiana while Levi was helping to drive cattle and on the way they stopped off at Julia's home and spent the night and rested the cattle. He went back several times and then they married and came back by horse back. It took them three days to come back. They spent the night in Devers as it is know today. At that time Old Man Devers was alive.
