Note to Debbie Anderson about Pop's Air Rescue Service:

I visited with Pop today (7-28-2009), and these are some of his memories.
First lieutenant, Willis S. Dunks, was assigned to the 71st Air Rescue Squadron, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage Alaska in March, 1955. He first travelled to Florida for 3 months training in flying the Grumman Albatros SA16. The SA16 was a complex airplane that could land on land, sea, ice or snow. It was also called the “flying boat” or “slobbering albert (albatross)” because of the boat hull spray as it landed or took off. He spent many hours taking off and landing on Lake Okachobee, Florida. He arrived in Alaska in August 1955.
His assignment as pilot of the SA16 was air and sea rescue anywhere, and to anyone, where they were needed in the State of Alaska. His commanding officer was Col. Maurice E. Speer. He was promoted to Captain while in Alaska, and he completed Artic Survival Training School in March, 1956. He often described flying as “hours and hours of boredom, punctuated by moments of stark terror.”
He has hundreds of stories of rescuing downed pilots, evacuating Alaskan natives from villages, both regular and emergency situations, such as evacuating women having babies, and other medical needs. Once he carried a 90 pound Eskimo woman suffering from Tuberculosis to his airplane, and remembers her big smile with no teeth. He also searched for lost and injured hunters.
He carried medical personnel who parachuted out of the plane when necessary, and those paramedics had a dog named Sam. Sam was trained for rescue operations, and once they tossed Sam out of the SA16 with a parachute to let him experience the effects. They never got Sam back in that airplane.
They also flew reconnaissance missions of Russian Movements at low level just a few feet above the Bering Sea off the coast of Russia.
When the Yukon River flooded during the “thaw” near Bethel, Alaska, they dropped blankets and needed supplies to the Eskimos.
He once set the Tundra on fire by tossing out an emergency flare and when it touched the dry tundra, it burst into flames. He was not sure how they were going to get it out, but used a bull dozer to put it out.
He often landed in remote villages and landing fields were very precarious – very short and often running up to a mountain face. They used Jet Assisted Take Off (JATO) bottles when needed to take off. They were 4 JATO bottles (2 on each side) which provided 1000 pounds of thrust each for 14 seconds. It was quite a site and quite a ride. He often dropped (jettisoned) the JATO bottles after use and always aimed for a moose to scare.
He also recalls being the first to land on one of these air strips and radioing back to the next plane to land, to be very careful of the softspots in the runway which might cause an airplane to tip over. He was surprised to hear the pilot of the plane behind him was his commanding officer Col. Speer saying, “Roger, Roger.”

11 EManuel M. Dunks was born December 15, 1888 in Huffman, Harris County, Texas. He was the 4th child born to Henry Levi and Julia Corinne Gill Dunks. He sold Bibles in 1905 to attend Baylor University but returned home to farm and ranch.

He would often make trips to Teneha to visit his sister Delia Martindale and there he met Lyda Hurst. After several trips to visit Delia, EManuel and Lyda were married on December 25, 1915, in Paxton, Shelby County, Texas. Lyda was born June 19, 1988 in Paxton. She was the first child born to David Spivey & Martha Lula Duke Hurst.

EManuel was a farmer and rancher, raising field crops of corn, cotton, and soy beans. Mostly he raised feed for the cattle. Julia Corinne Gill Dunks lived with Emanuel and Lyda until she passed away in 1935.

David Dunks was born September 11, 1917 in Huffman,Texas. His twin brother died at birth. David married Lurline Burke in 1940 and they had two children Edward Gene and Linda Lou. David worked for Gulf Oil Company. David died April 19,1972.

Willis Stalsby Dunks was born February 10, 1923 in Huffman, Texas. He married Mary Louise Evelyn Lintelman December 7, 1043. They had three children Darryle Wayde, Cheryl Elaine and Karen Louise. Willis retired from the Air Force after serving in Alaska, Biloxi, Colorado and Harlingen, Texas.

EManuel made a living selling fruit trees and in later years he planted 20 acres of paper shell pecan trees in Huffman, Texas. His grandchildren enjoyed playing in the pecan trees, riding horses and playing in the upstairs of the farm house.

EManuel Dunks and Lyda were active in Huffman Baptist Church. He often led the music and Lyda sang in the choir. She had a beautiful alto voice. Lyda was a wonderful cook and often would take freshly baked pies to newcomers and invited them to church. Her Bible is marked on the scripture with the preachers name and date he preached the sermon. Many times they showed up at churches where their grandson Darryle Wayde was preaching.

Lyda died in her sleep on February 16, 1969 in Huffman, Texas. She is bured at Huffman Cemetery. EManuel was hit by a car while driving a herd of cows across the road on April 19, 1972. He is buried in Huffman Cemetery.

14 December 18, 1935, Ella Florence Dunks Scott recalled that Henry Levi Dunks and Julia Corene Gill lived with the Emanuel Dunks' family their first year of marriage. Henry Levi Dunks and Ella's brother inherited a tract of land out of Lot 2 of the John Merry League in Harris County, Texas.

They built a home presumably on the land they inherited but upon completion found that they had built their home on tract 3 of the John Merry League, Harris county, Texas, which said lot 3 was owned by W. R. Baker. This necessitated that Henry Levi Dunks purchase lot 3 from W. R. Baker, which he did. This gave him a total acreage of 678 acres of land in lots 2 & 3 of the John Merry League, Harris County, Texas. After their purchase and inheritance of these lands, they lived there peacefully, without molestation, and used and enjoyed said property as a home, for cultivation, grazing and pasture land, and used the wooded portion for the purpose of running cattle, firewood, fence posts and sold the timber off the same several times to saw mill companies.

The land has been used, enjoyed, cultivated, by them for more than fifty years prior to their death, without adverse claim from any person or persons as to any part or portion or all of said land.

This land has been fenced on three sides for more than fifty years. A fence ran the length of the east line of the 678 acre tract; and that it ran along the north and south lines of said 678 acre tract all the way from the east line in a westwardly direction to the woods, or timbered land, which was used as stated as run for cattle, firewood, fence posts and for selling timber off the same with a cross fence at the edge of the timber or woods.

In 1895 Henry Levi Dunks built a new house on 160 acres out of lot 3 of the John Merry League, Harris County, Texas, such new house being built is the one that is now occupied by E. M. & Lyda Dunks. They lived with Granny Dunks (Julia Corene) until she died. The house is known as the Henry Levi Dunks old home place and is the place that was bequeathed to E. M. Dunks under the wills of his father Henry Levi and his mother Julia C. Dunks.

The fences surrounding this land as stated above are good and substantial fences; that they wer built as such and have been kept and maintained as such.

The 678 acres above named are generally considered by all who know the land to be the property of and known as "Dunks Estate".

Sworn and subscribed to before a Notary Public on the 18th day of December, A.D., 1935

Henry Levi and Julia Corinne Gill met in Louisiana while Levi was helping to drive cattle and on the way they stopped off at Julia's home and spent the night and rested the cattle. He went back several times and then they married and came back by horse back. It took them three days to come back. They spent the night in Devers as it is know today. At that time Old Man Devers was alive.

18 According to the genealogy notes of Jess Dunks:

Mary died during childbirth at Willow Creek, close to Great Falls, Montana. Basil buried her there and wrote a letter telling Milton Monroe Dunks about it. Basil was never heard from again. Milton Monroe Dunks and his last son Jesse Clay Dunks went to Willow Creek, dug her up and reburied her in the family plot in Boulder, Montana.

20 Willis Stalsby Dunks

Willis Stalsby Dunks was born February 10, 1923 in Huffman, Texas, the third child of EManuel and Lyda Hurst Dunks. He had an older Brother, David, born September 11, 1917. David's twin brother died at birth.

Will attended Huffman Elementary School grades 1 through 6, then he attended Crosby School and graduated in 1940. He was saved during a revival at Huffman Baptist Church when he was 8 years old. Marie Smith (Nelson) and her cousin Dorothy May Smith went forward to be saved during the invitation. Willis felt big lump in throat that was so uncomfortable, he thought he had better go down and be saved, too. He said it was amazing that that lump disappeared at once. (Reminded Darryle of when he was saved, standing out in aisle and holding on to pew until Willis came down out of choir to walk with him down the aisle to be saved at First Baptist Church, Crosby, Texas - June 8, 1952 - baptized that evening.

C. Wade Freeman often visited and stayed in the Dunks' home and talked to Pop about what it meant to be a Christian. Baptism took place that afternoon in the Atascocita River near the low water bridge.

Mary was in Mrs. Peveto's SS class in Crosby. Mrs. Peveto was explaining to Faye Martin (May) how to be saved. When she finished, she turned to Mary Louise and asked if she was ready to be saved, too. She prayed right then, made it public, and was baptized in First Baptist Church, Crosby, Texas

After attending Howard Payne for 1 year he transferred to Baylor for a quarter and then joined the Air Force in 1942. Willis already knew Mary Louise Evelyn Lintelman and her family well as they were in Crosby High School together where her father was President of the school board. He proposed to her while she was in High School and he was in Howard Payne.

Classified as a pilot, at the age of 20, Willis was stationed at Lacklin Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He and Mary had been talking about getting married and finally decided to but all of her family was in Crosby, Texas. While she made plans in Crosby, Willis made plans in San Antonio.

Willis, able to get a one day pass to town, rented a 1943 Chrysler Town and Country station wagon and began answering ads in the paper for rooms to rent. The first place he inquired was the nice frame home of a retired school teacher, Mrs. Wilkerson, at 1212 Rigsby. She even volunteered her home as the place for the wedding. It was like the Lord said, "Here it is" quoted Willis and it saved him lots of time, trouble, worry and running. He accepted the offer.

Between the living room and dining room was an archway and fire place----a perfect place for a wedding. Fred & Louise Lintelman brought Mary and also Oliver Nelson, Mary's uncle, to San Antonio to perform the wedding. They got married on December 7, 1943. They stayed in a motel in Brackenridge Park the first night and then lived in one room in Mrs. Wilkerson's house.

Willis now was a classified pilot and entered basic training in Witchta Falls, Texas, Shepherd Field. The next move was to Stanford, Texas, then to Perrin Field in Sherman, Texas, where Willis flew the BT 13 called the "Vultee Vibrator" when thrown into a spin it would shake and rattle.

The next move was to Ellington Field, Houston, Texas, Willis graduated from the Twin Engine Flying School on August 4, 1944 in class 44G and where he flew the AT 10 and was ordered back to Ellington after a short leave to fly as pilots for the navigation training.

On July 16, 1945, Darryle Wayde was born in Crosby, Texas. Willis was in the Air Force Reserves then went to work at Humble in the fall of 1945 for 7 1/2 years, On October 4, 1945, he was appointed Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was ordained as a deacon on May 9, 1948 by the First Baptist Church of Crosby, Texas. Louis B. Quareles was the pastor. Cheryl Elaine was born on December 11, 1951 in Baytown, Texas. Darryle was saved June 8, 1952 during a two week revival at First Baptist Church. Jessie Bolin was the preacher and Kenneth Ballthrop was the pastor who baptized Darryle.

In 1953 - 1955 Willis was stationed in Harlingen and flew navigation missions in the AT-18 Lockheed Hudson, the C-60, the C-47 (Gooneybird) and T-29 Convair. While in Harlingen, Karen Louise was born August 6, 1954. They attended Second Baptist Church there.

1955 - 1958 the Dunks made their way to the territory of Alaska to the 71st Air Rescue Squadran, Elemendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska, where Willis flew the SA16. On October 23, 1955 he was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant in the regular Air Force. This followed 90 days training in the SA16 at West Palm Beach, Florida. This plane was complex and could land on land, sea, ice or snow, also called the Flying Boat. While flying in rescue in Alaska there were hours of boredom punctuated by moments of stark terror. He completed Artic Survival Training School in March, 1956. They were very active in First Baptist Church and still have many friends from that time in their lives. Cherie was saved during an Easter contata and baptized by Felton Griffin at First Baptist Church, Anchorage at the age of 6.

Back to Harlingen in 1958 - 1961, where Willis flew the T29 also called a "flying classroom" with the responsibility of training navigators. He was the pilot in a training film for the Air Force called "Ditching the T29". He also flew Travis I. Hoover, a "Doolittle Raider" who always requested to fly as Will's co-pilot to get his flying time. These years they attended Parkdale Baptist Church where Karen, as a second grader, was saved and baptized. Will was an active deacon in the church.

1962-1964 Biloxi, Mississippi, Keesler Air Force Base, Will flew Generals and other V.I.Ps on various assigned missions. He refered to this time in his career as "You call, we haul." Darryle graduated from Biloxi High School where he was in the top 5% of his class and elected Most Intelligent. He attended Mississippi State as a freshman in the fall of 1963, where he was on the Dean's List. The family joined the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Biloxi where Jut Garret was pastor. He and his family became good friends of the Dunks' family. Will and Mary attended many Emmanuel reunions in later years. In June of 1964, Major Joseph Ross said of Willis, "I think his greatest strengths are his extensive knowledge and experience in flying and instructing and his willingness to dig into a problem with depth before recommending a solution."

Upon receiving new orders to James Connally Air Force Base, Waco, Texas, Will, Mary, Cherie and Karen moved to 406 Webb Street, the summer of 1964. Darryle drove his 1956 Ford from Biloxi to Waco with all his belongs to join the family. Will continued to fly the T-29 and transfer VIP's and give check rides. They attended Oak Lawn Baptist Church the first Sunday and met Brenda Ford, the preachers daughter, who was attending Baylor at that time. Cherie and Karen enrolled in Connally Schools.

Darryle and Brenda were married on January 18, 1966 at Oak Lawn Baptist Church, Waco, Texas. The following summer Will, Mary, Cherie and Karen drove the Alcan Highway all the way to Anchorage, Alaksa, to be stationed at Elemdorf Air Force Base once again, leaving Darryle and Bren behind to complete their studies at Baylor and pastor the Lorena Baptist Church, Lorena, Texas. A Christmas gift to Darryle and Bren was airplane tickets to Alaska so the whole family could be together to celebrate Christmas, 1966. March 18, 1967, Willis successfully completed the Artic Survival Training in 40 degrees below zero weather. He enjoyed a hunt with relatives from Texas and killed a moose and 3 caribou. The family enjoyed eating the delicious meat. Both Will and Mary taught Sunday School at First Baptist----young men and young women and made lasting friendships.

August, 1969, Will transferred to Saigon, Viet Nam. He served as Liaison Officer between the Air Force and the South Vietnamese Government. His office included all 5 branches of the military. He inspected prison systems, and base exchanges and provided supplies and services to the South Vietnamese Forces. One week after he left for Saigon, his first grandson, Brian Wayde Dunks, was born, August 19, 1969. Cherie graduated from Conally High School in May, 1970. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service August 1969-August 1970. After communicating for a year with cassette tapes, we welcomed Pop home and Brian finally met his Pop.

In 1970-1971, his final tour of duty, he was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Squadran Commander, giving check rides to pilots in the T-29 checking for standardization and safety procedures, making sure all pilots did the same thing and did it right. Karen was a junior in high school, Cherie was a freshman at ETBU and Darryle and family were in Lorena, Texas. They attended Circle Drive Baptist Church in Colorado Springs.

Having completed his military career of 21 years regular plus 8 1/2 years reserve for a total of 29 1/2 years service, he moved his family back to James Conally Base, purchased an acre of land on Virginia Drive, in Chalk Bluff, and built their retirement home. Karen graduated from Connally High School. Cherie met Larry Florence at ETBU and they were married August 28, 1971. Karen met Rex Thompson, Larry's cousin, at that wedding and they dated and were married February 23, 1974. Will worked at Binswinger Glass in Waco for 6 months and went to night school for Tarleton State University on Connally Air Force Base. He bought a Cessna 172 from Grayson Glass in Galveston, Texas and kept it for 1 year. He then directed his skills to building a home on Lake Mexia, practically by himself, driving back and forth every day for 3 months. They were members of Oak Lawn Baptist Church again. Willis was deacon and became chairman of the pulpit committee when the church invited Darryle to be their pastor from First Baptist Church, LaPorte, Texas. Will resigned from the committee and the church called Darryle as pastor. Darryle served as Will and Mary's pastor from 1973-1975.

Grandson Larry Matthew was born Sept 25, 1972 and granddaughter Lori Lee Ann Florence was born March 19, 1975. They were residents of Van, Texas, where their dad was oil supervisor and Cherie taught pre-schoolers in Sunday School.

1977, Darryle's family moved to Tanzania, East Africa to serve as Church Development Advisor missionaries with the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, serving there until 1979. Will and Mary decided to move closer to their daughters and grandchildren so they sold their Chalk Bluff dream home, sold their Mexia Lake property, and purchased a beautiful lake side home on Lake Palestine, Chandler, Texas. Larry found the add for the house in the Dallas paper and told the Dunks about the home. They moved into their home in early 1978 and joined West Lake Baptist Church, Chandler, Texas. For several years, he added on to the Lake House. Kit Allen Thompson was born on March 5, 1979. His parents Karen and Rex Thompson were residing in Troup, Texas.

In 1981, he completed his Certificate of Training for Cessna Pilot Instruction and began to work as a Flight Instructor at Pounds Field, Tyler and served in that capacity for 12 years, teaching many of the young businessmen of Tyler how to fly - taking them out of the woods and making a pilot out of them. Mattie Louis Thompson was born June 13, 1988. Many times all the family would gather at Lake Palestine for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Everyone enjoyed the lake with skiing and swimming.

In 1994, an accident with a chain saw on top of a ladder and a stubborn tree limb landed Will in East Texas Medical Center for 7 days and ended his flight instruction career on an abrupt note. It was a tough decision, but he then began to serve Ground Duty for the rest of his life.

A LETTER FROM MAJOR DUNKS

Greetings from Saigon. I have been here now since 15 August and I can truthfully say that I am not impressed with what I have seen. It is really pitiful to see so many people, such poverty and no apparent desire other than personal and for the moment.

My job is working as a staff officer in Liaison Capacity between the Joint General Staff of Republic of Viet Nam and the US forces (MACV) General Staff. My office is in the South V.N. compound just outside Ton Son Nhut Air Base. We try to keep the channel of communications open and clear between the Generals and that is not easy all the time.

I have two interpreters working full time translating for me. These two still have a problem to be sure what I mean. I have an army full bird for a boss and share the office with a Marine Major, Army Lt/Col., Lt/Commander in the Navy and another Army Major. We have special projects and investigations all the time and these necessitate trips to all parts of V.N. We fly most times when we go.

Pray for us over here always and that the year will be short, safe and worth while. I work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Write me if you can find time. Would love to hear from each of you.

I pray for the work there daily and covet your prayers during my tour. Oh, yes, we are grandparents now--Brian Wayde Dunks, born August 19, 1969. All doing fine.

Julia Corine Gill Dunks used to ride 280 miles on horseback to visit parents in Louisiana. "Avoid debts and live at home", is the advice of Julia, pioneer resident of the Huffman community near Crosby. She had a 590 acre farm, which is in charge of her son, Manuel.

Before her marriage, she was Julia C. Gill, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William Gill, who lived in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, where she married the late Levi Dunks and immediately afterwards moved with him to his home in Huffman, Tx.

Mr. & Mrs. Dunks were married in 1872, while Mr. Dunks was making one of his trips to the New Orleans market with a herd of cattle. Mrs. Dunks had an old-fashioned dinner horn more than 100 years old. "In old times, the horn blows three times in quick succession meant a distress signal, and Manuel and her sons would quit the fields and come immediately to the house," Mrs. Dunks said.

"Some months ago, my daughter-in-law, Mrs. Manuel Dunks, was hurt in an automobile accident near the house. I blew the horn three times, and Manuel knew there was trouble, though he hadn't heard the horn for many years." The young Mrs. Dunks recovered from her injuries.

Mrs. Julia Dunks marvels at the quick transportation of mail these days. She said when she was a girl if people got their mail once every three weeks or months, they were content. She remembers horseback trips she used to take from Huffman to Louisiana, a distance of 280 miles, to see her parents.

Julia Corinne died Sept. 14, 1935 at Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas. Her services were held Sept. 15, 1935 at Huffman Baptist church, Huffman, Texas. Rev. Amon Smith her pastor conducted the services assisteded by Rev. A. K. Peveto

Interment in Huffman Cemetery. She was laid to rest at 3PM the 15th of September 1935, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 24 days. The choir composed of members of the Huffman Baptist Church and the Humble Baptist Church furnished the vocal music. The song "When They Ring Those Golden Bells" was sung by the combined choirs. Also "On Christ the Sold Rock" was sung by the combined choirs.

The message was "She Hath Done What She Could"
She hath done what she could for:
Her Family
Her Home
Her Community
Her Church
Her Savior
"Her influence and good life will continue to live on in to the years in the lives of those with whom she came in contact."
